    Hi, I’m Kristen and I am an over-achiever.  Maybe you are, too?  I thought that accomplishments were a sure fire way to win the love and approval from parents, teachers, boyfriends even, and all the adults in my life assured me that it was the way to ensure a lifetime of safety and success.  So I got the good grades, went to college, did the internship(s), impressive job, law school, impressive firm, more job success, and then in my mid-30s… I got stuck.  

    Believe me, I never dreamed of working my way up to middle management.  I was behaving, doing, and saying the same things that my successful colleagues were – in fact, I was implementing their advice – but for me, it was backfiring.  I was told to assert myself, speak up, and stand up for what I wanted.  But then I was told I was too aggressive, and curt, and that I had no right to issue mandates (when I asked for an item to be added to a meeting agenda).  No matter what I did, it was misconstrued, and I seemed to be hitting my head against the glass ceiling with a vengeance.

    And then I learned about gender bias.

    It was as if all the light bulbs went on at once.  It changed the trajectory of my career, and I knew if other women understood what I now knew, that they would endure less spinning of the wheels and more captaining of their own proverbial ships.  I’ve done the research on not only the impact of bias, but how it affects everything else, including your prospects for being hired, promoted, and your self-confidence, too.  It’s why I founded Work. Like A Girl.  It’s why all our programs and coaching sessions:

    • teach you why you’re not being seen, valued, or promoted as you should be (spoiler: it’s the system, not you)
    • ask you to view other women as community, not competition
    • teach the tangible skills to create more inclusive environments, and assess whether your workplace has the necessary leadership to implement any needed changes
