How to Ask for a Raise
Typically the last quarter of the year marks Annual Review season…that super fun time of year in which we’re asked to evaluate whether we met this year’s company goals. Whether your boss adheres to this method of evaluation or not, here’s my thought: keeping track of your accomplishments is the perfect way to start a support a conversation that ends with a salary increase. Use this time in front of a decision maker to ask for a raise.
The data tells us we must. Despite asking for a salary increase, women are less likely to receive a yes to their request. And what more can we discuss about the wage gap? It’s real, impacting all women, but women of color more severely. I hesitate to mention those realities, because I know they can feel defeating. But here’s what I know: we have the power to change our reality. And I rather feel defeated and persevere, knowing I did all I could, than have your daughter come to me in ten years and ask why she has to face this same bias at work.
I know this for sure: We have the power to create the change we seek.
In today’s video, I break down three steps to take to ensure that you receive the increase you deserve. Do you have suggestions I did not include? We’d love to hear them in the comments below!
